I recently came across an inspiring story about a retired firefighter who’s giving back to his community in a truly unique way. Daniel Lougeay, a former Fairview Heights firefighter from Marissa, has donated a classic 1963 Chevrolet Howe fire engine to the Southwestern Illinois College Fire Science Program. This generous in-kind contribution will allow current and future students to gain hands-on experience operating a fire hose pump and learning various firefighting techniques.
Daniel explained that helping the next generation of firefighters excel is what truly matters. "Not only does it benefit them personally, but it ultimately contributes to the safety of the public," he shared. He purchased this vintage fire engine from the Willisville Fire Department back in 2002, using it for parades and antique fire truck exhibitions over the years. Now, the truck will take its place at the SWIC Clay Baitman Fire Science Center in Belleville, home to all their fire science classes. The program consistently graduates over 30 firefighters each year.
Southwestern Illinois College offers a comprehensive two-year Associate in Applied Science degree in Fire Science, which includes two specialization tracks and 11 certificate programs.
