House fire in Green Oaks, 3-24-16

Early this morning, shortly after 1 AM, Libertyville firefighters were dispatched to 1470 Greenbriar Drive in Green Oaks (served by the Libertyville Fire Protection District) after a homeowner woke up to the sound of a smoke alarm. To their shock, they discovered that a van parked outside had caught fire and the flames were beginning to spread towards the attached garage. The urgency of the situation prompted an immediate response from Libertyville firefighters as well as support from automatic-aid companies. Upon arrival, the first responding engine quickly assessed the situation and reported intense flames breaching the roof of the garage. Firefighters wasted no time and immediately deployed their deck gun for an initial offensive attack. However, as the engine’s onboard water supply depleted, reinforcements were needed. A tanker truck arrived shortly thereafter, providing much-needed relief to continue the firefighting efforts. Simultaneously, a hand line was put into action to further combat the spreading flames. As the fire intensified, a strategic water shuttle system was established, with successive tanker trucks continuously supplying water to both the Libertyville tanker and the engine positioned in the driveway. Due to the rural nature of the area, which lacks access to hydrants, the fire department escalated the incident to a Box Alarm status. This move brought additional tanker trucks (also known as tenders) to the scene, ensuring a steady flow of water to manage the growing blaze. Despite the garage and its contents sustaining heavy damage, firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent house, greatly reducing the potential risk to life and property. The fire was finally brought under control approximately an hour later, prompting the "Box Out" signal to be issued. This signaled the conclusion of the primary firefighting operations, allowing companies to begin cleanup and demobilization procedures. Attached are several images capturing key moments from the scene. Larry Shapiro’s photographs provide a vivid glimpse into the intensity of the firefighting efforts. From firefighters wielding tools as they approach the fire scene to the critical process of one tanker truck "nursing" another during the crisis, these images highlight the teamwork and determination required to manage such a challenging situation. One particularly striking photo shows the charred remnants of the van that ignited the blaze, while another captures the attached garage completely destroyed by the fire. Additional shots showcase the aftermath of the incident, including firefighters working under the glow of lights from a Pierce fire engine equipped with an Ail-Burt light tower.
