The Daily Herald recently published a short piece highlighting an inspiring initiative by Wheeling firefighters and staff in partnership with Operation Warm, aimed at providing free winter coats to children who cannot afford them.
At Station 24, the fire department’s headquarters, firefighters distributed 100 U.S.-made winter coats to students from Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 on Saturday. The event was organized by the local firefighters’ union, with support from department leadership and school officials.
Firefighter Emmett Gribbens, president of Wheeling Firefighters Local 3079, explained that the project was initiated by the union but received full cooperation from the department and the school district. He mentioned that the original goal was to raise funds for 80 coats, but due to generous donations, they were able to provide 100.
Gribbens emphasized the importance of the program, noting that it helps ensure children stay warm during the cold months. “It’s not just about the coats—it’s about showing kids that their community cares,†he said.
The event drew positive reactions from parents and students alike. Many expressed gratitude for the kindness and generosity displayed by the firefighters.
Photos from the event show children receiving their new coats, smiling and looking cozy. These images, captured by photographer Larry Shapiro, highlight the heartwarming nature of the initiative.
This kind of community effort not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters a sense of unity and compassion among residents. It's a great example of how local organizations can come together to make a real difference in people's lives.
