Wheeling firefighters provide free winter coats for area children

The *Daily Herald* recently published a short piece highlighting a heartwarming initiative by Wheeling firefighters and staff in collaboration with Operation Warm, aimed at providing free winter coats to children who cannot afford them. The effort took place on Saturday at Station 24, the fire department’s headquarters, where 100 U.S.-made winter coats were distributed to students from Wheeling Township Elementary District 21. Firefighter Emmett Gribbens, president of Wheeling Firefighters Local 3079, explained that the project was organized by the union but received strong support from both department leadership and school officials. He mentioned that the original goal had been to raise funds for 80 coats, but thanks to generous donations, they were able to exceed that target and provide 100 coats in total. The event not only helped ensure that children stayed warm during the cold season but also brought the community together in a meaningful way. Volunteers from the fire department worked closely with school staff to make sure each child received a coat that fit properly. Many families expressed their gratitude, calling it a thoughtful and much-needed gesture. Photos from the event show smiling children receiving their new coats, captured by local photographer Larry Shapiro. These images reflect the joy and impact of this kind-hearted initiative, which showcases the power of community service and compassion.
